Oil Issues and concerns

If you are not planning to trade or sell your car soon then you should give attention towards oil issues. An engine that utilizes a quart of oil each 1,000 miles is begins to show the results of wear. The quantity of oil it is utilizing continues to be acceptable;

however it will gradually increase as the miles accumulate. When it reaches the point where it is utilizing a quart every 500 miles or less, this time it has to be renovated.

Oil consumption depends mainly on two things: the piston rings and valve guides. If the valve points are worn, or if there is an excessive amount of clearance among the guides and valve stems, or if the valve guide seals are worn, missing, cracked, broken or indecently installed, the engine will suck oil down the guides and into the cylinders. The engine could still have great compression, but will use a great deal of oil.

An oil consumption dilemma caused by damaged valve guides can generally be cured with a valve job. Knurling, sleeving or replacing the guides-valves, or boring the installing and guides-valves with oversized stalks will stop losing oil.

Oil may also work through the cylinders or rings if the rings are badly damaged or worn, if the cylinders were not honed properly once the engine was built (or rebuilt), or when the rings had been installed improperly.

When a newly-built engine is initially started, the rings need a certain amount of time to "seat" or break-in. If the rings neglect to seat correctly, the engine uses oil. This may possibly be if somebody applied the incorrect finish towards the cylinders, failed to neat and lubricate the cylinders correctly prior to the engine was fired up, or didn't use the correct break-in procedure.

When the rings and/or the cylinders are in fault, the engine may have less than normal compression readings.

Sometimes, worn rod bearings, excessive bearing clearances and/or excessive oil pressure can splash an excessive amount of oil about the cylinders, causing oil to acquire past the rings.

The treat for worn rings as well as cylinders would be to overhaul the engine block. The cylinders need to be refinished and new rings installed to regain great oil control.
