DeLorean DMC 12 is an exotic sports car which was originally manufactured by John DeLorean's DeLorean Motor Company in 1981-1982. It was the only model the company ever produced and was most commonly known as DeLorean.
A modified version of the car became iconic for its appearance in the movie “Back to the Future” as a time machine. The DeLorean DMC 12 made its mark on film as a time machine and it was rightly fitting because it was so far ahead of its time when manufactured.
All the parts of Back To The Future movies were classic, but the car they chose for movies was something very special too. According to the movie, DeLorean DMC 12 could travel in time under certain atmospheric conditions. When DeLorean commissioned Colin Chapman, the Formula One design innovator, to design a world class sports car in 1979, little did he know that his car would become one the most famous movie cars. To make a movie about a car which will travel through time, director Robert Zemeckis needed an exotic sport car for taking the lead role and DeLorean DMC 12 was the solution for that.
This standard street car has many unique features, including the engine which was a 2.8 liter V6 PRV (Peugeot-Renault-Volvo). The body design of the car was a product of Giorgetto Giugiaro and is panelled in brushed SS304 stainless steel. The car also features gull-wing doors with a fiberglass “underbody” and has affixed with it the non-structural brushed stainless steel panels. It was called the DMC-12 due to its original price of $US12,000, but its market cost went more than twice of that.
Apart from Back to the Future, the DeLorean DMC 12 has been featured in many films and on television. The DeLorean time machine has been considered as iconic feature in American pop culture and American film history as a whole.
